2009 Summer Tournament Series Kicks Off
Lefties Dominate
Course Record Threatened

The First Tee of St. Johns County’s Summer Tournament Series kicked off on Saturday June 27, 2009 with The First Tee Masters.  The tournament had a record 39 competitors competing in 3 divisions 5-7 Years Old, 8-12 Years Old, and 13-18 Years Old.

img            The tournament kicked off with Elkton, Florida’s Ethan Church crushing his drive right down the middle of the fairway.  Brookes Burkhardt (St. Augustine, FL) got off to an early lead with a bogey on the first hole, however, the consistency of the left-handed Noah Church (Elkton, FL) proved to be too much, finishing with a final score of 34 on the 6 hole circuit.  Brookes Burkhardt came in second shooting 37, followed by Ethan Church in third place with a score of 39.  The next tournament for the 5-7 year olds will be The First Tee Open taking place on July 25, 2009 at The First Tee of St. Johns County.

The 8 – 12 year old division brought some drama, the field of 23 was broken into two imgdraws, after the morning draw finished, Quintal brothers Matthew and Ryan (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL) held the clubhouse lead shooting solid 42s.  However, after battling a brief rain storm, the afternoon draw came out shooting low, Nicholas Jahn (Palm Coast, Fl), Sol Lee (Seoul, South Korea), Dylan Olsen (Palm Coast, Fl), Zack Ott (Palencia, Fl), Austin Cothron (St. Augustine, Fl) and Jeremy Eaton (Jacksonville, Fl) all came in with rounds in the 30s, however, left handed Adam Trethewey (Jacksonville, Fl) proved to be too strong finishing with a three over par 32.

The 13 – 18 year old division was a birdie-fest, with the field of 7 totaling a record ten birdies.  Anthony Gomez lead the field with a bogey free 25, 5 under par, missing the course record by a mere one stroke.  Spencer Schindler and Matt Shea tied for second with an even par round of 30.
