St. Johns County girl made sweet work of "sarsaparilla," used no memory aides to get through "mnemonic" and ended up with more than a "modicum" of success in Saturday's 2010 Regional Spelling Bee.
After 43 rounds that ended with her correct spelling of "cataract," home-schooled student and First Tee of St. Johns County Junior Member Grace Remmer heads to Washington, D.C., in early June to represent Northeast Florida at the national bee.
The World Golf Village-area girl was still in a bit of shock after winning the trip to Washington, $200, a $100 savings bond, gift certificates, a new dictionary and her name on a championship plaque. She said she was "very, very, very" nervous in the final rounds.
"I'm elated, and I'm shaking all over. It was exciting and nerve-wracking," Grace said. "I studied, studied some more, studied a lot more. ... I just studied the words and had my mom drill me lots."
