 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

'Cataract' wins spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee for St. Johns County girl

The 11-year-old defeats 13 competitors, survives 43 rounds, wins Northeast Florida regional spelling bee with "cataract."

An 11-year-old St. Johns County girl made sweet work of "sarsaparilla," used no memory aides to get through "mnemonic" and ended up with more than a "modicum" of success in Saturday's 2010 Regional Spelling Bee.

After 43 rounds that ended with her correct spelling of "cataract," home-schooled student and First Tee of St. Johns County Junior Member Grace Remmer heads to Washington, D.C., in early June to represent Northeast Florida at the national bee.

The World Golf Village-area girl was still in a bit of shock after winning the trip to Washington, $200, a $100 savings bond, gift certificates, a new dictionary and her name on a championship plaque. She said she was "very, very, very" nervous in the final rounds.

"I'm elated, and I'm shaking all over. It was exciting and nerve-wracking," Grace said. "I studied, studied some more, studied a lot more. ... I just studied the words and had my mom drill me lots."

Fifth- through eighth-graders who won spelling bees in Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Flagler, Hamilton, Madison, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee and Union counties assembled for the regional bee, sponsored by The Florida Times-Union at the Main Library at 303 N. Main St. in Jacksonville.

After a round of practice words, the bee began. "Renovate" and "totem" took out players in the first round. Three more fell minutes later over misspellings of "pragmatic," "acronym" and "cognition." Some sailed through words like "bequeath," "ambiguity" and "juggernaut," while "ominous" and "peloton" (main body of riders in a bicycle race) caused more to stumble.

Three were left by Round 25, 46 minutes in. "Draconian" took out one in Round 37, leaving Grace and Shelby (who came in second place) trading turns and some misspelled words for seven more minutes.

Grace gets a six-day trip to the national bee, set for Wednesday to Friday, June 2-4, In Washington D.C..
